Guest Blog: Why a Portable Potty Matters for Baby Pottying

Toddler on a Potette 2 in 1 potty

Written by Steph Elliott, founder of babypottying.co.uk

Every family finds their own way of doing things, especially when it comes to potty training. What works brilliantly for one child (and one set of parents!) might not work at all for another, and that’s completely okay.

You might have started hearing about Baby Pottying, also known as Elimination Communication, popping up more and more in parenting conversations. It’s one approach some families are curious about or choose to try.

We’ve teamed up with Steph Elliott from babypottying.co.uk to break it down and share what Baby Pottying actually is and how Potette products can help.

As a mum of two boys (aged 3 and 1), I’ve experienced pottying at very different stages—and in all kinds of everyday situations.

With my eldest, having a reliable potty option when we were out and about made a huge difference during the toddler years. And now, with my youngest, we’ve been practising elimination communication (EC), or baby pottying, from early on.

What is baby pottying?

If you’ve never heard of baby pottying (often called EC or elimination communication), you’re not alone.

Put simply, it’s about tuning into your baby’s natural cues and rhythms for wees and poos, and offering them the opportunity to go in a potty rather than always relying on nappies.

It doesn’t mean rushing toilet training or expecting perfection. Instead, it’s a gradual and responsive approach that:

  • Encourages communication from an early age

  • Helps children retain awareness of their bodies

  • Can reduce reliance on nappies over time

Many parents start small—offering the potty at predictable moments like after naps, after feeds, or before bath time. And while this can feel quite straightforward at home, things often feel less clear once you step outside the front door.

Using the Potette Plus Out and About

If you’re practising baby pottying, you’ll already know that timing and responsiveness are everything.

At home, it’s usually more straightforward to offer the potty at predictable moments—after a nap, during a nappy change, or after a feed. But what happens when you leave the house?

This is where a reliable portable potty becomes essential.

Having a portable potty means you can:

  • Continue responding to your baby’s cues

  • Maintain consistency in your routine

  • Avoid relying entirely on nappies when you’re out

And perhaps most importantly, it helps your baby feel that their communication still matters—wherever you are.

Why the Potette Plus 2-in-1 Works So Well

When it comes to portable potties, the Potette Plus 2-in-1 is one of the most recommended options within the baby pottying community—and for good reason.

1. It’s genuinely portable

Lightweight, foldable, and easy to carry in a changing bag or under the pram, the  Potette Plus 2-in-1 is designed for real-life use. You don’t have to plan your entire outing around access to a toilet.

2. It works anywhere

Whether you’re in a car park, at the side of a walking trail, or in a busy public place, you can quickly set it up and offer the potty when your baby needs it.

3. It grows with your child

It works for babies, toddlers, and beyond—either as a standalone potty or a toilet seat adapter. That makes it a practical investment, not just a short-term solution.

Confidence Changes Everything

One of the biggest barriers to continuing baby pottying outside the home is confidence.

Without the right setup, it’s easy to default back to nappies when you’re out. But when you have a simple, reliable option like the Potette Plus 2-in-1, it feels much easier.

And that confidence often leads to more consistency, which is where the real magic of baby pottying happens.
